Legal Marriage in Japan for Foreigners
Requirements & Process
Get Legally Married in Japan — Without the Confusion
Getting legally married in Japan as a foreigner can feel overwhelming. Between embassy requirements, Certificates of No Impediment, document translations, and ward office procedures, it’s easy to feel unsure about what’s actually required.
I help international couples prepare everything correctly so your legal marriage registration in Japan is smooth, stress-free, and officially recognised.
Who This Is For
This service is designed for:
- Foreigners getting married in Japan
- International couples (both non-Japanese)
- Couples unsure about marriage requirements in Japan
- Anyone wanting to avoid delays, rejection, or missing documents
Can Foreigners Legally Marry in Japan?
Yes – foreigners can legally marry in Japan.
Japan’s marriage system is registration-based, meaning your marriage becomes legally valid when your documents are accepted at a Japanese ward office (市役所 / 区役所). There is no legal ceremony with a celebrant required – in other words, having a “wedding” does not mean legal marriage.
However, requirements can vary depending on your nationality and ward office, and incorrect or missing documents can result in delays or rejection.
Requirements for Legal Marriage in Japan (Foreigners)
To register a legal marriage in Japan, most couples will need:
- Passport
- Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (or equivalent)
- Apostille
- Japanese translations of all non-Japanese documents
- Completed marriage registration form (婚姻届)
Important: Requirements differ depending on your country, embassy, personal situation and ward office.
Common Problems Couples Face
Many couples struggle with:
- Not knowing which documents are required for their nationality
- Confusion around Certificates of No Impediment
- Incorrect or missing translations
- Conflicting information online
- Uncertainty about ward office procedures
- Fear of being turned away on the day
- Not being able to communicate at the ward office counter when they turn up
This is where having expert guidance makes a big difference.

review
“Megumi was an absolute godsend and we could not have achieved our dream of eloping in Japan without her! Initially, we thought we could muddle our way through the experience with Google translate but our first experience of bureaucracy in Japan did not fill us with confidence. Megumi was able to liaise with the ward for us, confirm the documentation requirements, complete the necessary document translations, and interpret for us remotely on the day we registered our marriage.
Having Megumi guide and support us through the whole experience eased our wedding nerves and allowed us to enjoy the best day of our lives.
We cannot thank you enough for everything you did for us, and highly recommend other couples planning to marry in Japan reach out to you for the most stress free experience.”
